Coming out of the 80's independent comics scene with the creation of Mage and Grendel, Matt Wagner's writing and artwork were well honed and incredibly striking compared to the many titles of that time. It had themes of mythology, determination, and destiny. Wagner's work for DC and especially on Batman made use of this mastery. However, it was always those astounding color works that caught the eye of the casual reader that made them an instant fan of Wagner. His color pieces on textured paper continue to showcase those timeless themes along with eye popping colors.
