Steve DitkoFlash Gordon
Flash Gordon Unpublished Story "Web of Treachery" Original Art Group of 19 (Gold Key, 1982). Ditko art in a Gold Key comic? It almost happened! As noted in Alter Ego #160, Robin Snyder, who was a contributing editor to Western Publishing, "scheduled Ditko to illustrate several stories ... those plans were aborted when the long-running company shuttered its comics operation." Mr. Snyder was kind enough to share with us that Ditko's total output in that stint consisted of "Flash Gordon, Star Guider [for a never-published Gold Key series to be titled Astral Frontier] and a mystery story or two." This story "Web of Treachery," written by George Kashdam, was intended for the 1982 release Flash Gordon #40, alas the series' last published issue was #37. One page seen here has seen print in Ditko's self-published comic (with Snyder) Out of This World #17. Rendered in ink over graphite on Bristol board with image areas of 12.25" x 17.75". Sold
