Flash Gordon Union Carbide Ad

Media Type: Pencil and Ink

Al Williamson - Flash Gordon Union Carbide Magazine Ad Original Art (King Features, 1970). The space adventures of Flash Gordon continue with this magnificent page, titled "Dream Devils of the Volcanic World." Flash breaks the Volcanic Devils' hypnotic hold by using Bakelite, a product made by Union Carbide. These nostalgic ads were in keeping with the early seventies interest in old comic books and fandom, and it's well-known that Flash Gordon was a major inspiration for George Lucas when he was developing Star Wars. Al Williamson was certainly the artist to turn to in creating new Flash Gordon art. He had worked on the short-but-sweet run of comics published by King Features, as well as serving as one of Dan Barry's assistants on the Flash Gordon newspaper strip. However nothing quite compares to these incredible Union Carbide pages. This series began in 1970, so this is an early one. The art for this page is in ink and Zipatone over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 12.75" x 18". A small bit of text paste-up correction is missing, the page is slightly tanned, and there are small pinholes in the top margin
