A Pilgrim's Progress

 For a brief span of years, between 1905 and 1910, Winsor McCay, author/artist of such fondly remembered strips as Dreams of the Rarebit Fiend and Little Nemo in Slumberland, took readers on an allegorical journey as "Mister Bunion" made his Pilgrim's Progress to try to relieve himself of the valise labeled "Dull Care." Formulaic, as were all of McCay's strips, this particular graphic excursion allowed McCay a bit more latitude to offer his wry social commentary on matters of the day. Here, Mr. Bunion comments on the museum-like qualities of current-day advertising art in a sarcastic manner that's as appropriate now as it was 115 years ago. The piece is signed "Silas" (the name McCay commonly used when penning different strips for different papers) in the last panel. Created in ink over graphite on thick Bristol board, with an image area of approximately 14" x 18.5". The logo is a printed paste-up, and there is glue residue in the top section, and overall toning. In Very Good condition.
